Saltsea Chronicles

Saltsea Chronicles is a story-driven adventure game from the award-winning indie studio Die Gute Fabrik (Mutazione, Sportsfriends). 

Captain Maja’s misfit crew must heist their impounded ship and mount a rescue. Guide the crew across islands of a post-flood world known as ‘Saltsea’. Explore strange and wonderful communities, uncover a deep conspiracy, choose where to go and which crew members to investigate with, and chart a journey through twists and turns, difficulties and delights.

I was hired as a programmer by Die Gute Fabrik to work on Saltsea Chronicles and later I got promoted to Deputy Lead Programmer. I have worked on it for ~2.5 years and have experienced most of the development cycle (everything except the pre-production phase) while working on this game. The team size was around 20-25 people and I was one of the 3-4 programmers on the team. This game was made in Unity, using C# and Ink.

My main responsibilities were:

  • Managing the programming team when the lead programmer was on leave

  • Implementing UI

    • Crew Select

    • Almanac

    • Menu hub

    • Special Event Panels

    • Item Bubbles

    • Input Prompts

  • Setting up locations (both in Unity and Ink)

    • Incl. setting up transportation lines

  • Implementing testing tools

  • Implementing controller haptics

  • Writing documentation

  • Submitting PS5 and Switch patches

  • Doing some QA on console (PS5, Nintendo Switch) and PC/Mac.
